Most ride-hailing drivers know the story: peak hours are profitable, slow hours aren't, and the platform takes a cut that can feel steep. A2B Lift was built differently. From day one, the goal was to give drivers more ways to earn — not just on the rides they accept, but on the network they help build.

This guide breaks down every income stream available to A2B Lift chauffeurs in detail, with real earnings examples so you can see exactly what's possible.

Income stream 1: On-demand ride earnings

This is the foundation. When a passenger books an A2B Lift ride and you accept it, you earn a percentage of the fare. A2B Lift's commission structure is competitive and transparent — there are no hidden fees, no equipment rentals, and no weekly targets that affect your rate.

How fares are calculated

Fares are based on distance and time, with dynamic pricing that reflects peak demand. Unlike some platforms, A2B Lift does not use aggressive surge pricing that makes passengers reluctant to book. Instead, premium pricing during busy periods is moderated so that drivers earn more during peak hours without deterring bookings.

The platform also includes gratuity prompts — passengers are encouraged (though not required) to tip their driver after a completed trip. Tips go directly to you, in full, with no deduction.

Example: A typical Friday evening in Johannesburg

4 completed rides (average R180 each)R720
Platform fee deducted− R108
Average tip (15%)+ R90
Your earningsR702

Income stream 2: Long-distance trips

This is where A2B Lift separates itself from every other platform in the country. If you regularly make trips between cities — or if you're willing to plan them — long-distance bookings can multiply your earnings significantly.

The model is simple: you list your upcoming inter-city trip in the app, set your price per seat, and indicate how many passengers you can take. The platform surfaces your trip to passengers searching that route and date. They book and pay in advance through the app. You pick them up, drop them off, and receive your payment.

What makes long distance so lucrative

Consider the numbers. A Johannesburg to Durban trip (560 km) takes roughly 5 to 6 hours. If you have a 7-seater vehicle and offer 5 passenger seats at R700 per seat, you earn R3,500 for a single trip. That is before any tips. That is before any on-demand rides you accept while in Durban or on the way back.

Example: JHB → Durban, 5 seats at R700 each

Total passenger paymentsR3,500
Platform fee− R350
Fuel estimate (560 km)− R700
Net earnings, one tripR2,450

For drivers who make regular weekend trips home to another city, or who are willing to plan routes in advance, long distance is the single highest-earning opportunity on the platform.

Setting up long-distance availability

Open the A2B Lift driver app, go to your dashboard, and tap "Long Distance Availability." Set your departure city, destination, travel date, price per seat, and how many seats you're offering. Your route goes live immediately and remains visible until the travel date or until all seats are booked.

Income stream 3: The referral programme

The third income stream is passive — and over time, it can become the most powerful one.

When you refer another driver to A2B Lift and they register and complete their first trip, you receive a bonus. More importantly, you earn a percentage of the platform's fee on every trip that driver completes — for as long as they're active on the platform.

The A2B Lift referral programme supports up to 5 levels of referrals. If the driver you referred also refers a driver, you earn a smaller percentage from that second-generation driver's trips too. The percentages are:

"I've referred 8 drivers to A2B Lift in the past year. Even when I'm not driving, my referral income covers my fuel costs for the week."

The 2×15 matrix for IBO members

If you register as an Independent Business Owner (IBO) within A2B Lift, you enter the 2×15 forced matrix — a structure that allows you to earn from a network of up to 32,766 positions, even without actively recruiting.

When new members join A2B Lift, the system places them in available matrix positions automatically. If your matrix fills up, the earnings potential is substantial. IBO membership has a once-off registration fee and a modest monthly subscription to maintain active status.

You can find the full details of the IBO programme and the 2×15 matrix on the referral programme page.

  2. Download the driver app and complete onboarding. The app walks you through accepting your first ride.
  3. Set your availability and accept your first few rides during peak hours to build your rating quickly.
  4. Plan your first long-distance trip. Even if it's just one route on one date, post it and see how many seats book.
